In 1983, Steve DeRousse made the life changing decision to attend The University of Missouri- Kansas City in order to pursue an Accounting degree. Like most college kids, Steve DeRousse knew he needed a way to fund his UMKC college education. So, he did what he knew how to do best: paint houses. And now, what started as a way to pay for college tuition has turned into one of Kansas City’s most trusted professional painting companies: Major Painting.
As a high school teenager, Steve started putting his entrepreneurial skills to work in the early 1980s, by starting a neighborhood lawn mowing company. One summer, however, Kansas City experienced a drought that left Steve with little to no work. In order to supplement his income and continue his UMKC education, he painted his family’s home for his father. When a neighbor saw the craftsmanship and attention to detail Steve illustrated, they hired him to paint their house as well. Soon, Steve found himself with a growing list of projects—one that kept him busy for the remainder of his college career.
With his degree in hand and what was already a thriving painting business, Steve officially founded Major Painting in 1988. He combined his accounting degree with his trade and began serving residents of Kansas City focusing on maintenance painting or better known as "repaint projects". As the business grew, Steve began expanding and eventually arrived at what is now a sizeable business that can execute any sized painting project in the Kansas City Metro and beyond. With his expanded crew sizes and diverse labor talent, Major Painting is now focused on serving both commercial and residential customers, some of which have included large instituitional clients such as Kmart, Price Chopper and US Bank, to just name a few.
As an industry professional, Steve is committed to excellence in his field. While there are more than 3,000 painters in the KC metro area, less than 10% are involved in the industry’s national organization, the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA). Not only is Steve an active member, he also became the president of the local chapter in 2011 and attends the national convention every year in order to learn the latest trends, products, and practices of the Painting Industry. Steve is also a member of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), and the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce.
For Steve and Major Painting's staff, the business’ mission is about improving the environment and community in which they serve and reside. According to Steve, a simple coat of paint can make a world of difference, and he enjoys putting his skills to work for both commercial and residential customers who trust Major Painting with their projects.
As a family man, Steve and his wife reside in Lee’s Summit with their four, sports-loving sons. And, as a proud dad, Steve puts Major Painting to work on behalf of the local community by sponsoring the Lee’s Summit Baseball Association, which helps both his sons and area athletes find an outlet for healthy competition. In order to better the community as a whole, Steve and Major Painting also support the Ali Kemp T.A.K.E. Foundation and Kansas City Hospice.
For Steve DeRousse, painting is a lifelong craft—one that he’s proud to have enjoyed for more than 25 years. Through a commitment to excellence and years of experience, he and his crew at Major Painting look forward to serving you!
