Harrah’s 1st Level Casino Floor Remodel and Cosmetic Update

Remodel and Cosmetic Update Project Summary

In the Summer of 2019, Harrah’s Kansas City Hotel & Casino in North Kansas City contracted with Major Painting to complete a cosmetic upgrade (remodel) to the complete first floor of their casino. This project would end up being phase 1 of 2, where phase 2 would consist of the 2nd level of the casino floor and some entrances. The remodel of 1st level of the casino floor, which is approximately 30,000 square feet, consisted of painting the ceiling grid, changing the ceiling tiles out, removing the wallpaper along all of the exterior walls of the casino and painting them.

Project Highlights

  • Location: 1 Riverboat Dr. North Kansas City, MO 64116

  • Building Type: 2-Story, 30,000 sq. ft. Commercial Building

  • Client Type: Entertainment & Hotel

  • Completion Date: September 2019

Project Scope

On the ceiling, Major Painting’s team wiped the existing ceiling grid clean, scuff sanded it with sanding blocks, prepped the area accordingly so there would be no over spray, and applied a covering coat of PPG’s Breakthrough! Satin finish paint to all of the ceiling grid along the 1st floor. After the ceiling grid was painted, Major Painting’s team moved to patching of the drywall soffits and caulking/prepping of the crown moulding associated with the soffits. After all patching and prep was completed to the soffits and crown moulding, (2) coats of PPG Interior Speedhide Eggshell Satin finish paint was applied to the crownmoulding and Eggshell finish paint was applied to the drywalled soffits. The reason for the sheen visual difference was to to add some contrast between the two different substrates as the colors were similar. When the ceiling portion was completed, Major Painting’s team then moved to the walls to remove the wallpaper and prep the walls for paint. Meanwhile the ceiling tile contractor came in and removed the old ceiling tiles and put the new, black ceiling tiles in place. With over 10,000 square foot of wallpapered wall, Major Painting’s team had its work cut out for them. The process of removing the wallpaper and going to a painted wall is very involved. The process entails removing the wallpaper, sanding any glue residue, applying one coat of RX-35 wall sealer, applying a full skim coat of drywall mud to the wall, sanding the wall smooth, applying one coat of PPG drywall primer followed by two coats of PPG Interior Speedhdie Eggshell finish paint.

This project was completed during normal business hours 7am-5pm. As a result, it was necessary for us to break the 30,000 square foot floor into 7 sections where we would quarantine the works space to minimize disruption. Major Painting spent the first week working on the ceiling. In the second week, Major Painting completed the wallpaper removal associated with the section while the ceiling tile contractor completed his scope. An electrical contractor was also utilized to remove and replace the ceiling tiles around all can lights and speakers in the ceiling.

The project took approximately three months to completed, and after all scopes were completed, the 1st level of the casino floor looked completely unrecognizable.

The key to making this project successful was created in the pre-planning of the project’s work schedule and sections as well as constant communication. Our client stated the following about the project after it was completed:

"Harrah’s North Kansas City Casino was incredibly impressed with the work provided by Major Painting. As you could imagine trying to coordinate a “refresh” of a casino floor is not an easy task. We are a 24 hour business that never closes, so the demands of the work are pretty complex. Major Painting was so easy to work with - they were flexible with all of our needs and ensured we had minimal disruption to our guests. The result of their work was transformational. Our guests and employees love the new look! We are grateful to have worked with such a professional company."
